Yesterday the winners of the John Newbery Medal and Randolph Caldecott Medals were announced for excellence in children’s literature. The Newbery winner is, “The Girl Who Drank the Moon” by Kelly Barnhill. Honors were also given to, “Wolf Hollow” by Lauren Wolk. Both of these books are available in the recent Scholastic Book order.

The Caldecott winner was, “Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean- Michel Basquiat”. Honors were given in many different categories to the book, “Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Dreams Brought to Life” by Ashley Bryan.

As a parent, when I ask my son what he's learning at school I hear the standard answer, 'I don't know.' I have learned that if I ask more specific questions I may get a better answer. Now I ask him,'What are you writing about in language arts class or what book or story are you reading in class?'
